The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) at UCLA is excited to invite the class to apply for the 2011-2012 Executive Board! Listed below are all of the open officer positions. If you have questions about a position, please contact current board members directly (names and emails are provided below). All members of the class of 2014 are invited to apply regardless of background or previous involvement.

Applicants must send a brief (1/2 page or less) statement of interest per position to apamsaucladgsom@gmail.com by Saturday, February 19 at 12 noon. Confirmation replies will be sent at that time. Applicants may pursue up to three (3) positions, and should list them in order of preference. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to attend a casual mixer with the current board at Weyburn Terrace on Thursday, February 17th. We will be asking for RSVPs for the event closer to the date.

The 2011-2012 Board will assume full duties after a transition period, during Block 4 in mid-March.

APA Health CARE, MS1 Health Fair Liaison Committee (deadline: Friday, September 10th)
We are looking for 2-3 first years to become 1st year committee members for APA Health CARE. The MS1 Liaisons will work with APAMSA and the undergraduate organization APA Health CARE to organize health fairs in communities throughout Los Angeles. Liaisons will have a chance to take on leadership roles throughout the year and learn about the organizational structure of the most active health fair committee on campus.

Requirements:
1. Help coordinate and lead medical students in 3 or more health fairs throughout the year.
2. Help organize and lead at least 1 community health education workshop (in topics such as hypertension, diabetes, or hypercholesterolemia).

If you would like to apply for a position, please write a short statement answering the following question: “Why do you want to be a MS1 Liaison for APA Health CARE and how do you feel you can contribute to our team? Please discuss any relevant experience that makes you a good fit for this position.”

* First-Year Representative(s). Communicate between the first year class and the rest of APAMSA by publicizng events and informing other first years how to get involved. The board will review applications and select 1 to 2 representatives based on interest.

* Webmaster. Maintains and updates the website. Works closely with the APAMSA President and Secretary and UCLA technology services. Although a skeleton website has been recently redesigned, there is still a lot of room for new features, design, etc. Experience with content management systems (CMS, e.g. blogs) is preferred but NOT necessary. The board will review applications and select 1 Webmaster.

If you are interested in the First Year Representative or Webmaster position, please write a short (no more than 1/2 page) description of why you want to run for that position any ideas you might have for the upcoming year. Our volunteers provide glucose, cholesterol and BP screenings, and we also work with a team of other professional students and physicians to provide basic care and counseling to our clients. These health fairs are a lot of fun as they are usually a part of another larger event, and they definitely a great chance to practice your clinical skills. Hepatits B Awareness Activities in the Community

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), 100 times more infectious than HIV/AIDS,

is the leading cause of liver cancer in asians,

and many are still not aware of their hepatitis B status

Hep B Free Coalitions from Southern California come together to bring Hepatitis B awareness to Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

WHAT: May is Hepatitis Awareness Month & Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and May 19 is World Hepatitis Day! In observance, the Hep B Free Coalitions of Long Beach/South Bay, Los Angeles (LA) and Orange Counties are collaborating on a Southern California-wide “Hep B Free” campaign to increase awareness about chronic (lifelong) hepatitis B, a disease that affects about 10% of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). The Hep B Free campaign seeks to create public and healthcare provider awareness about the importance of testing and vaccinating all AAPIs for hepatitis B, to promote routine hepatitis B testing and vaccination within the primary care medical community, and to ensure access to treatment for chronically infected individuals.

APA Health Care is hosting two health fairs next weekend, and we are looking
for med student volunteers! Our volunteers provide glucose, cholesterol and
BP screenings, and we also work with a team of other professional students
and physicians to provide basic care and counseling to our clients. These
health fairs are a lot of fun as they are usually a part of another larger
event, and they definitely a great chance to practice your clinical skills.
No previous health fair experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome.

The next health fairs are Saturday and Sunday, May 15th and 16th. We are
looking for a few volunteers to fill either morning (10-12:30) or afternoon
(12:30-3) shifts at each fair.

2010 National APAMSA Summer Research Fellowship

We’re excited to announce the 2010 National APAMSA Summer Research Fellowship, new for this year! Up to three (3) fellowships are available to fund medical student research in the summer, primarily aimed at students finishing their MS1 year. A $1500-2000 stipend will be awarded to student(s) selected for the fellowship. The selected student(s) would be required to attend the APAMSA National Conference from October 15-17, 2010 in Baltimore, MD and present at the Poster session. Half of the stipend will be disbursed at the start of the project, and the other half will be disbursed at the conference. The bulk of the fellowship is to function as a living stipend, with a portion intended to fund costs of conference travel/fees and poster materials beyond funding provided by the students' medical school.

The National Board will primarily assess the following criteria. A successful applicant may not necessarily meet all criteria, and a broad range of applicants are encouraged to apply. The Board also reserves the right to assess other criteria and to request a phone or in-person interview (if a National Board member is available in the applicant's home area).

Whether the research project addresses questions related to the core mission of APAMSA: including but not limited to, health care disparities involving Asians and Asian-Americans, diseases that are of particular concern in the Asian and Asian-American communities, and education issues related to Asian-American medical students. The project may involve any form of research, whether clinical research, translational research, bench/basic research, international field work, etc.
Student involvement and/or interest in APAMSA at the Chapter, Regional, or National levels.
Student accomplishment in academics, research, community service, and other aspects of his or her resume.

Applicants must submit their materials by email only, to education@apamsa.org by 10pm on April 30, 2010. Letters of Recommendation should be submitted separately by recommenders to the same address, with the applicant’s name and medical school clearly identified. Letters may be submitted in a scanned format with the letter writer’s signature, or as PDF or Word if an electronic signature is available. All other materials should be in PDF or Microsoft Word format. Applicants should receive an acknowledgement by email by May 2, 2010, and final decisions will be made before May 15, 2010.

National Conference Poster Session and Competition

We are also excited to announce up to ten (10) slots for a poster session and competition at the 2010 APAMSA National Conference, also new for this year! One $500 top prize and up to two (2) $250 runner-up prizes will be offered. Prize winners, and other participants, will be recognized with a certificate and on the National APAMSA website and in other National APAMSA communications. More information will be forthcoming, but our preliminary abstract deadline is August 27, 2010.

Scholarships and Call for Abstracts: 15th Conference on the Health Care of the Chinese in North America

The Chinese American Medical Association of Southern California (CAMASC) is excited to have conference scholarships and call for abstract opportunities for medical students interested in minority health issues.

The Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadians (FCMS) has selected CAMASC to host "Changes and Challenges in Medicine", its 15th Conference on the Health Care of the Chinese in North America in Los Angeles, CA on October 8-10, 2010.

This conference aims to disseminate scientific knowledge about the health care needs and disparities of the Chinese in North America. CAMASC has a limited number of scholarship available to cover the full cost of registration for physicians-in-training and medical students to want to attend the conference all three days. CAMASC would also like to invite students to submit abstracts regarding to health problems related to the Chinese population for presentation at the Conference.

APA HeathCARE has another health fair coming up! It's the South Asian Network Health Fair on Feb 21st (9:00am-2:00pm). There will be two shifts: 9-11:30am and 11:30am-2pm (we'd like 5ish people per shift). The health fair will be at:

UCLA APAMSA has been working along with the LA Liver Disease Task Force to create educational material and promote awareness about the devastating but preventable illness, especially in undeserved communities. With these goals in mind, we are very excited to present to you the following lunch talks:

Dr. Steven Han, Director of the Hepatology Research Center and Assistant Director of the Asian Liver Program, will discuss current progress and updates in Hepatitis B Management.

Dr. Koy Parada will discuss the current Hep B free efforts of the Los Angeles County Hepatitis B Coalition.

Fri 02/19 - Forum/Discussion- Free lunch with RSVP

Come gather in a large group setting to discuss the current direction of Hep B awareness, research, treatment, and leadership.

Dear Class of 2013, the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) at UCLA is excited to invite the class to apply for the 2010-2011 Executive Board! All officer positions are open, listed below. Interested students should send a brief (1/2 pg or less) statement of interest per position to apamsaucladgsom@gmail.com by Mon, Feb 1st at 12 noon. Confirmation replies will be sent at that time. Applicants may pursue up to three (3) positions, and should list them in order of preference. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to attend a casual mixer with the current board at Napa Valley Grille on Mon, Feb 1st at 5p. Food will be provided by APAMSA, an RSVP would be appreciated with the application. The 2010-2011 Exec Board would assume full duties after a transition period, currently slated for the beginning of Block 4 in mid-March.

President: Leads and directs the Executive Board and oversees UCLA APAMSA's mission as a whole, represents the chapter within the medical school, and on the regional and national levels (one position only).

Internal Vice President: Coordinates APAMSA health fairs in under-served communities at multiple sites, in collaboration with APA Health CARE (up to three positions). Note: applications for IVP are currently closed. If you applied for the IVP position, your application has been retained, and selection will occur along with the rest of the board. You are free, and encouraged, to apply to other positions, and should reply by the stated deadline with IVP ranked according to your preference. You will also receive an additional email shortly.

External Vice President: Coordinates mentorship and pre-professional activities with Undergraduate APAMSA, serves as the APAMSA liason to the Minority Health Conference, interfaces with other outside organizations (up to two positions).

Hepatitis B Coordinator: Oversees education initiatives for HBV and related illnesses, coordinates APAMSA's screening and vaccination efforts in conjunction with the IVP(s), interfaces with outside organizations involved in HBV including the LA County Hep B Coalition (up to three positions).

Treasurer: Oversees the organization's finances, raises funds and conducts related projects to support APAMSA's mission (one position only).

Secretary: Oversees communications within the board, with the general membership, and with the outside public, takes meeting minutes (one position only).

South Asian Health Representative: Oversees initiatives to address South Asian health needs in multiple areas (up to three positions).

UCLA receives $1500 "Gold" grant for HBV screenings

Our Webmaster Eli Luong did a great job on the refresh -- check out the new banner, more detailed officer and recognition page, updated projects and links, and awesome new pictures page. The recently released Los Angeles/Orange County Hepatitis B Resource Guide, developed by UCLA APAMSA and UC Irvine APAMSA, can also be found on the projects page. Revisit the revamped home page often for the latest APAMSA news and events. This embedded blog/news section will give detailed updates on upcoming events and ways you can get involved starting late January 2010. There are now three embedded twitters on the home page, and you can click on their titles to read the full feed.
