Apply for the National Hepatitis B Conference in Boston

There is only ONE WEEK left, before the application deadline of Friday, September 24, 2010, midnight.

This is a particularly valuable conference if you:

- Are interested in learning more about ways your chapter can get involved with hepatitis B initiatives or want to present a poster to share your chapter’s activities with others

- Want to meet renowned hepatologists, the founder of the Hepatitis B Foundation, one of the discoverers of the hepatitis B virus and many more amazing clinicians & researchers

- Want a free trip to Boston (up to $300 per person provided for flight/transportation costs, to be reimbursed at the conference. In addition, we will also provide housing). We will select 2 representatives per school. We may select more, depending on the different number of schools who apply.

We are having our first mentorship social this Friday, 9/24 1pm at Noodle Planet in Westwood (1116 Westwood Boulevard). Please come to meet your mentor and eat some delicious Thai food! A majority of the food costs will be covered through APAMSA. For more information, email apamsa.evp@gmail.com.

Health Fair Training Date
Save October 15th, to learn how to get involved in underserved communities and do cholesterol and blood glucose screenings! More info to come!

APA Health CARE, MS1 Health Fair Liaison Committee (deadline: Friday, September 10th)
We are looking for 2-3 first years to become 1st year committee members for APA Health CARE. The MS1 Liaisons will work with APAMSA and the undergraduate organization APA Health CARE to organize health fairs in communities throughout Los Angeles. Liaisons will have a chance to take on leadership roles throughout the year and learn about the organizational structure of the most active health fair committee on campus.

Requirements:
1. Help coordinate and lead medical students in 3 or more health fairs throughout the year.
2. Help organize and lead at least 1 community health education workshop (in topics such as hypertension, diabetes, or hypercholesterolemia).

If you would like to apply for a position, please write a short statement answering the following question: “Why do you want to be a MS1 Liaison for APA Health CARE and how do you feel you can contribute to our team? Please discuss any relevant experience that makes you a good fit for this position.”

* First-Year Representative(s). Communicate between the first year class and the rest of APAMSA by publicizng events and informing other first years how to get involved. In addition, First Year Rep(s) lead a project of their own design (with the help of the board) that helps to expand APAMSA's services, activities, or projects. The board will review applications and select 1 to 2 representatives based on interest.

* Webmaster. Maintains and updates the website. Works closely with the APAMSA President and Secretary and UCLA technology services. Although a skeleton website has been recently redesigned, there is still a lot of room for new features, design, etc. Experience with content management systems (CMS, e.g. blogs) is preferred but NOT necessary. The board will review applications and select 1 Webmaster.

If you are interested in the First Year Representative or Webmaster position, please write a short (no more than 1/2 page) description of why you want to run for that position any ideas you might have for the upcoming year. Email it to apamsaucladgsom@gmail.com by FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10. If you are interested in multiple positions, please write a proposal for each position and rank your preferences. We are excited to have conference scholarships and call for abstract opportunities for medical students interested in minority health issues. This year the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadians (FCMS) has selected CAMASC to host "Changes and Challenges in Medicine", its 15th Conference on the Health Care of the Chinese in North America in Los Angeles, CA on October 8-10, 2010. This conference aims to disseminate scientific knowledge about the health care needs and disparities of the Chinese in North America.CAMASC has a limited number of scholarship available to cover the full cost of registration for physicians-in-training and medical students to want to attend the conference all three days. CAMASC would also like to invite students to submit abstracts regarding to health problems related to the Chinese population for presentation at the Conference. American Liver Foundation
It was great meeting you all this past week. I just wanted to update you guys on the Liver Life Walk that the Hepatitis B Coordinators talked about at the general meeting last Monday. The event is taking place on Sunday, September 19th and I included some details here.
